September 30-October 2

September 30- Still at Pebble Isle Marina. Sunday. Breakfast at the restaurant. No lunch today because of big breakfast. Girls had the courtesy car reserved to go to town to pick up a few groceries. They went to Wmart in Waverly TN about five miles from the Marina. I mentioned yesterday Don and I worked on a special project. Picture at right is the flat panel satellite TV antenna we installed. Local TV reception has been somewhat problematic since we left. It is kind of hit and miss. You can always get the infomercial, church and cartoons but usually only one or 2 of the network stations if you are lucky, and sometimes nothing at all. Very few marinas have cable available. We traveled with Tom-Kat and he had a flat panel satellite TV antenna installed on his boat and it seemed to work well when he was docked. It is very aesthetically pleasing and looks like a solar panel. I ordered all the pieces from various sources and had them shipped to the store and then on to Pebble Isle.. The installation went well. The little meter you see hanging from the panel allows you to aim the antenna. This evening we had a looper potluck dinner. 28 people in attendance. One couple owned a houseboat in the marina and had brought it from the Ohio river to winter and stay on it for the winter. The houseboat is now for sale. They have met so many loopers passing through, that they just knew they are missing out on all the fun. As soon as they sell their boat they will buy a loop boat-which can be anything but a houseboat! The girls fixed a Taco Salad which went over well!. Another picture perfect day courtesy of the Person in charge of the weather.

October 1. We thought there might be a mass exodus of boats leaving the Marina to head for points south. However after fueling up(134 gals) and getting a pumpout SF was the 5th boat to depart and travelled alone. The weather started out cool and cloudy but gradually warmed as we approached our destination. Our goal today was about 54 miles to anchor behind Double Island at MM 146. About MM 100 we left the wide confines of Kentucky Lake and most of the Bass Boats darting about. I know I will be given the true picture by Bill G and OHare but these boats seem to be going here and there at 50 mph but never stay in one place long enough to fish. A 250 hp motor on a 20' boat--as they roar up or down the River the only thing that appears to be touching the water is the very stern of the boat. I would love to be the Mercruiser Dealer in this part of the country! They say a fishing tournament on this Lake is a smaller version of a Nascar event. Anyway our anchorage tonight is very serene and beautiful. I have run out of adjectives to describe the weather. A little warm as the wind has died. Brats on the Jenn Air. We threw out a stern anchor so we could position the satellite antenna and keep it focused. I got to watch a little of the football game after the girls watched Dancing but by then the Patriots had the game well in hand. You can see by the picture that the River on one side is lined with stone bluffs while the other side can be sand beaches. Quite a contrast. no internet service and no cell phone service at this anchorage. However if we had bought our volleyball we could have taken the dinghy to the nearby sand beach and played volleyball as someone was so kind as to leave the court in place

October 2 A beautiful sunrise and not a cloud in the sky. We will trek on (up) the River today to MM 196 to anchor behind Diamond island. Perhaps named for its rattlesnake population-who knows- only our ancestors. When the weather is perfect there is nothing more serene and peaceful than anchoring for the night. This anchorage is not quite as pretty as last night but we are near a bend in the River and the large tows nead to deftly make this turn. The River narrowed quite a bit near MM 192--before that it was quite wide and sometimes as wide as the Mississippi. Not many tows on the river today. Only one tow we met on a sharp curve. I offered to hold back but he said " keep on cummin and I'll meet ya on the two". Getting to understand the " river captain talk" rather well by now. Arrival time was 3pm. Dropped anchor in 18' of water. Plenty of room to swing but we dropped a stern anchor to keep from swinging too close to shore. There are a few tree stumps over near shore and to keep us in10' of water. Marinated chicken (italian) was the entree' tonight. Nice breeze-high 86 today. Keep these fantastic days coming!
