Today I wanted to finish the work in the engine room. Drain the fuel filters, tighten the belts, and I needed 2 more engine zincs. The only place that has them is the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard-a couple of miles by foldie or only a mile by dinghy, however it was very windy. Tried to borrow from neighbor boats but they were all the wrong size. About 4pm the wind died somewhat and I fired up the dinghy motor and headed for the Boatyard. Trip was uneventful through the choppy sea. Some rocks visible above the surface but one, just outside of the entrance, to the boatyard is just below the surface and is marked by a telephone pole in the water. Tonight is Rib night at the nearby Jib Room. The same crew that went to steak night last Saturday took in the ribs tonight. No limbo dance-rain came down just as we got done eating the ribs which were great.
Today is snorkeling day and island hopping. Above & Below Abaco (Kay owner & Christian helper) will take Judy and I and John and Gail (Our Time) and their daughter Lisa and grandchildren Carter & Madison in their 26' center console boat to several nearby Islands and then snorkeling. First stop Hopetown on Elbow Cay. Our first stop was at the Hopetown Lighthouse in Hopetown pictured above. Still a working lighthouse. We climbed to the top and took pictures on the way up. What a fantastic view from every window opening on the way up as well as at the top. Not too safety conscious here. There was a a rail around the top but some loosely woven netting was attached to the rail. Kids were closely attached to mother & grandparents. The 360 degree view encompassed the harbour, the Atlantic Ocean and the Sea of Abaco. I have often thought the view from Perry's Monument on Put In Bay at South Bass Island in Lake Erie was spectacular but this without a doubt tops that view many times over. Next stop was Man-O-War Cay. Very small little town and harbour. Open air Alburys boat factory here plus a defunct sail making shop that now makes handbags. Kay had snacks for us and we supplemented that with several home baked cinnamon rolls from a lady that sells them on the street. Same here as in Guyana Cay-only paths for golf carts. Bought my Man-O-War tee shirt here. On to our snorkeling adventure. Just a few miles out to the Atlantic ocean where we tied up to a well placed mooring ball to snorkel at Green Turtle Reef. Very spectacular as the reef rises from a depth of 20' to very near the surface at low tide. The water is very clear and there are many beautifully colored fish and purple and yellow coral as well as many caverns. After our snorkeling adventure we returned to Hopetown where we had a late lunch at the beautiful Abaco Inn. The Inn sits on a small hill overlooking the Atlantic. About 4pm we returned to our Boat. Slept well tonight after a very light dinner sandwich.
What can I tell you about after our great day yesterday. Very very windy today. It would be very hot if not for the wind, so it is very pleasant. My ice maker on the flybridge does not make ice very well when it is warm. I think it needs more ventilation so I installed a couple of vents in the cabinet which should cure the problem. Tonight was a quiet night-no cocktails on the dock-Judy and I had chicken on the grill with cucumber & onion sandwiches on homemade Bahamian bread. Doesn't get any better than this!
