Banana Beach near Port Lucaya
Beach at Port Lucaya
We don't even mention that we are "stuck" here due to weather. We are near a somewhat large "metropolitan" area. A short water taxi ride takes us to Port Lucayan Village. A collection of retail shops of various quality and short term stays for various mega yachts of the world. On Friday we had dinner in the Village with Rita & Bob from Magnum Opus and Dave & Barb from Chablis both Boat Harbor boaters. Lots to do here. Other boats from Boat Harbor are also here. They left Boat Harbor before we did and tried to cross but turned back so if we ever get a good weather window there will be lots of company. Easter Sunday was celebrated with a dinner on John & Gail's boat. On Monday we rented a car and headed east. Visited the Lucayan national Park-not as grand as we know them but several underwater caves, beaches and backwater creeks. Stopped at Smitty's restaurant (i.e. filling station) upon recommendation of friends from Decatur-what a surprise-great meal-never would have stopped-- as they say looks are not everything.
Tax Day April 15th the weather man says it is okay to cross. Our destination is West Palm Beach Fl some 90 miles away. We always look for a weather forecast of seas 2' or less. Off we go but we didn't get 4 miles from port when we found out the weatherman was giving a Chamber of Commerce forecast. The seas were rolling and five footers were not uncommon so back to our very comfortable boat slip we came. The next day the 16Th we considered leaving at night and making a night crossing but the window was very short and any premature closure or change would have made for uncomfortable conditions. Keep in mind the boat is seaworthy but the occupants may not be. Gail & John have a friend of a friend here. He flies for Air Canada and lives here in the winter. His wife Doris treated us royally as Dave was working. We made several trips to the beach including a trip to Banana Beach where we had a marvelous lunch and walk on the beach. Everyday something new and a new adventure
