April 19-21 Staniel Cay

0ur trip from WW is a rather pleasant 25 miles although we don't know where we will be staying,  Compass Cay Marina didn't sound to hopeful to accommodate  both boats.  Staniel Cay our preferred destination-well we are on the waiting list.  As we get with in cell phone range, I call Staniel Cay Yacht Club and Suzzana says they have a couple of spots for us.  Our docking was pretty easy but little did we know we would be moved to accommodate the megayachts that are coming in.  This is paradise and paradise time (Easter week) for these big boys.  One young gal that was a crew member on one of the yachts told us that all of our  "tugboats" were cute and they all looked the same!  After docking we called the golf cart rental place on the VHF radio and were soon on our way to the bakery and grocery store.  This a very very small settlement and the grocery selection is limited.  The mail boat just came in so the vegetable selection is okay.
Our first stop -the Bakery.  A loaf of bread right out of the oven.  Store signage is not a big thing here.  Everyone knows where the bakery is.  It is the yellow house.  They sell bread right out of the kitchen.  Watching tv in the next room

The general store and Grocery.  This is the grocery side
The Yacht Club (definitely not your typical fine dining establishment) is the happening place for dinner but after a cocktail hour that lasted too long we set out on the golf cart to find a little local flavor for dinner.  We stop at the Hot Dog Restaurant and Bar.  The name would lead you to believe that they served food- but no sir we only serve drinks.  They serve food across the street at Taste & Sea Cafe.  They are closed-it's 8:30pm.The guy at Hot Dog hollers across the street for them to open up.   I find a young man at the back door and tell him we want to eat.  Talks to his mom and they say come on in, we will open up.  We had the best Coconut shrimp, baked potato and salad for $15 and the Kaliks were $4.  The power went off while she was taking our order but she said not to worry, they cook with gas and we can eat by candlelight.  Sounded good to us.  Oh by the way we have not had electricity at the marina since we have arrived, so we have run the generator and Air Conditioner a lot.  Mitch & Barb were very confident they were going to catch fish the next day so we made arrangements to have Bernadette the cook at Sea Scape cook the "catch of the day" the next night.

True to their word, the next day, Mitch and Barb went out in the dinghy, drifted across a small reef, caught a grouper, a porgy and a grunt.  More than enough for a fresh fish dinner at Taste & Sea again.  Another great evening.

The water here is magnificently clear.  The nurse sharks and sting rays play under our boat all day long.  You feel like you could reach down and pet them.  Funny how lots of little fish get a free ride on the back of the sharks.

Today, Thursday, we went to Thunderball Grotto, which is a cave where the James Bond movie Thunderball circa 1965 was shot to go snorkeling.  It was a spectacular aquarium of fish. The current is very strong through the cave, even though it was near low tide.  The water is warm.

One item to do on our check list and that is to the see the swimming pigs at Big Majors island nearby.  We will do that as we come back in a few days. Tomorrow we are off to Black Point
