May 15-16 Beaufort NC mm 203
The journey from our anchorage at Mile Hammock took us through the Marine training grounds of Camp LeJune. Today there wasn't any training activity in the vicinity of the ICW so we were allowed to proceed. There are signs along the waterway indicating the waterway could be closed due to training exercises. Beaufort (pronounced "BoFurt" NC is one of those must stops and it lived up to its reputation. Nice floating docks. Another one of those towns with many culinary selections as well as lots of history. The third oldest town in North Carolina. Many old houses dating back to the 1700's. The picture is of a burial ground right downtown. Many Revolutionary War & Civil War casualties buried here. North Carolina suffered the most casualties in the Civil War. Judy and I had dinner at Clawsons in a building that had been around for over 100 years. On Friday Ciderella (Ken & Peggy) along with Life is Short(Dave & Kathy) arrived. Later in the day Judy and I walked around town and later took a bus tour via an old London Doubledecker bus for a tour of some of the old homes. The Maritime Museum here is first rate and it is free, but it is so good you feel obligated to drop some money in the one of those glass enclosed donation boxes. The picture is of the Maritime library in the museum. Blackbeard the Pirate lived near Beaufort and there are lots tales and possibly forklore about his life here also. Tonight we had an extended cocktail hour on Ciderella's boat and afterward all of us went to the Spouter Inn for dinner.
