June 1 Portsmouth VA mm0

The untangling of the boats took place at 8am this morning. Everyone had placed extra lines on their boats as tornado warnings were out last night. Five of us departed for the 11am opening of the north end lock at the Dismal Swamp. As we departed, I complimented Jacob (10) on his singing last night and he said thank you and stuck out his hand and said "it certainly was a pleasure to meet you". I am sure these kids have learned more in the last year on a boat than they would have if they were in a formal school. A beautiful peaceful trip was enjoyed as the boat slipped through the tea colored water and the only sounds were the boat parting the water, the multitude of birds, and an occasional sound of cars on the nearby highway. Soon we are at the lock and several sail boats were also waiting for the lock. The lockmaster artfully gave orders to all the boats to enter the lock and we descended 11 ft with a full load of boats. Soon we arrived at Portsmouth--what a change in scenery-aircraft carriers, working vessels and definitely a working river. Norfolk Va is on the east side of the River and as you know the navy has quite a military presence here. Judy and I walked uptown for dinner tonight. Really wide sidewalks, streets and a very pretty historic district.
