May 4-May 16 Ortega Landing Marina
Wading into the River to see the Shuttle launch
Shuttle Atlantis lifts off
The crowd gathering and waiting for lift off
Judy and Gail found a shady spot
As we passed through Cocoa and Titusville we see the space shuttles Atlantis and Endeavour on the launch pads. Atlantis is scheduled to lift off May 11 and Endeavour is the backup rescue. What a spectacular view of the lift off if only we were about 10 days later. You can anchor within about 5 miles of launch and that is about as close as any humans get. After settling in at Ortega landing and Gail taking John to the airport we decide to rent a car on Monday the 11th, drive to Titusville to see the space launch. Not near as good as from the boat but still a good view from Space Launch Park in Titusville which is about 140 miles from Jacksonville. We arrive about 11am. Already lots of people there. It is hot-low 90's and no wind. By launch time there are 3000 people including those wading in the River to get a better view. We were probably 10 miles away. The picture of the launch does not come close to what you see. The shuttle is actually out of site by the time you hear the noise. Quite spectacular and worth the trip.
