April 11-15 West End Grand Bahama Island

The trip of 58 miles from Great Sale anchorage to West End was very pleasant. The Sea of Abaco was very smooth and not much air moving so the trip was rather warm with a temperature in the mid 80's. Apparently we were a day late arriving at West End as today, Friday, was a good day to cross the Atlantic to Florida--at least some boats that had been stacked up waiting to do the crossing left and that made room for us at the Marina. The next day Saturday appears as though it may be possible to cross although the wind is to be from the south which will give us a beam sea and some rocking from side to side. At 5;30 am on Saturday we arose to a worsening weather forecast so most of the boats that were going to leave decided to stay put. Gypsy Time decided to give it a try and he left about 6am. Tomorrow, Sunday, looks not much better and then a cold front with a fierce north winds will be moving in so we are here until at least next Friday which will be the 18th. Small boat projects, bookwork, etc will be in order for awhile. Monday Judy took a trip to Eight Mile Rock (8 miles away) with 6 other ladies and the local resort driver to get groceries. Today, Tuesday, tax day, a bus trip of about 25 miles to the town of Freeport and Grand Lucaya was in order. Picked up locals on the way and dropped some off. Apparently no schedule. Bus privately owned. Cash flow must not be too good as we stopped for fuel and only took on 5 gallons of diesel-$27. Driver said he would pick us up at 5pm from the shopping center and hotel complex. Apparently he was running late so up pulled a lady in a private car and said she was to deliver us to Carmen the bus driver. By the way the bus was a 12 passenger Toyota van which was pretty new. All in all a great day. Saw lots of tourist shops, the casino and the large Westin hotel and a very pretty beach overlooking the Atlantic. Windy but chilly perhaps made it to 69. Tonight it is howlingly windy but the low will probably only be 68. The picture is the view from the flybridge of our boat
