St. Augustine rightfully lays claim to being the oldest city in the U.S. We came with the intention of only staying 2 days, but there is so much to see here we delayed our departure an extra day. The marina is right next to downtown so the first day (Monday) we took a trolley tour of the town. So many museums and so many things to photograph. Henry
Flager, who was John Rockefeller's partner in Standard Oil, had a major role in developing the east coast of Florida. He was responsible for building a railroad from Jacksonville all the way to Key West. Consequently he built an
opulent hotel in St Augustine for the rich and famous. It is now the
Flagler College. Many other famous landmarks here, including the catholic cathedral which was established in 1565. Highly recommend a visit to this city if you have the opportunity. The next day (Tuesday) we visited Anastasia Island which is right across the
ICW to visit the St. Augustine Lighthouse and the Alligator farm. Alligator sightings have been scarce on this trip so we wanted to see the alligators and crocodiles up close. The lighthouse was magnificent. I climbed the 219 steps to the top and had a grand view from 165' in the air. This evening we hosted a cocktail party on our boat for the
loopers here. Prime Time (Kelly & Heidi), Great Expectations (Jim &Trish),
Xplorer (Mike & Cathy). Sanctuary I and
JoyatSea are also here but were unable to join us. After cocktails we had dinner with
Xplorer & Prime Time.
