May 1-2 Jekyll Island GA

The tides are arising to great heights. As we pass through Georgia tide variations of 9' will not be unusual. Along with the large swing in tides comes a large flow of water to fill in or drain the waterways through which we travel, so the current flow can be with you to push your boat along or it can be "agan you" to slow you down a lot. As we made our way to Jekyll Island we saw speeds anywhere from 5.9 mph to 9.5 mph depending on where we were in the constant flow of the ebb and flood of the tidal change. Also the ICW has silted in in places so now our travel plans must take into consideration the tides and determine when we can safely travel over the several shallow spots in the ICW. In certain places we can only travel at mid to high tide. Our anchorage is very near the Kings Bay Naval Station which is a submarine Naval Base. Just before we pulled anchor a submarine was leaving the base. Security boats all around. All you could see was the top of the sub but it looked like a giant whale. The security boats had machine guns on their bows and they kept all boats away from the sub and they announced over the radio that we could not take pictures. So no pictures of the sub. We waited for a rising tide before departing our anchorage at 11:30 am. Arrival time at Jekyll Island was 3pm. Nice marina and restaurant on site. Judy and I ate there and I had a 'low country boil". Later we were joined by Great Expectations, Ciderella, and Life is Short, while we listened to a four person band with a female singer that was very good. Pretty localish.
Must have been good as we stayed to the last song at 10pm.

Today Judy put on her walking shoes and we walked to the historic district of Jekyll Island which is over a mile away. In 1886 the rich and famous of the day built a club here for their indulgence in the winter. The club still stands but now as a hotel which is pictured. Lots of history to tell here but you must visit here to appreciate. If you were a Rockefeller, Goodyear, etc you were a member of the Club. Had lunch at the Hotel. Borrowed the marina car to get a few groceries. After dinner we went to Jim & Trish's boat (Great Expectations) to plan our journey tomorrow to an anchorage before we travel on to Savannah GA
