June 5 Colonial Beach VA Anchorage

Our next stop after leaving Smith Creek Anchorage, a mere 35 miles away is Colonial Beach Va. A narrow entrance channel lead us to a narrower place to anchor. This must be the bay that claims the honor of the most crab traps per square meter. No place to anchor off of the channel because of all the crab traps, so we set down the anchor right in the main channel and hope we are out of the way. Nobody gets on the radio and asks us to not anchor here so it must be okay. Our Time snuggles up to us and very little wind, so I only put out 60' of chain in 7' deep water. An off the boat seafood dinner sounds good, so we lower our dinghies and head for Docksiders Restaurant. Very good meal. About the time we land the dinghies the wind and the current picks up. Later that night, the crew next door aboard Our Time had a wild game of euchre going and after some mumbling from the girls about table talk, Dave looks out the window and notices we are in a very different place than when we set anchor. A glance off the stern suggests that we are indeed amongst the crabtraps and the anchor has let us down and we have drifted several 100 yds across the channel. Rather than try to remove ourselves at night from the crab traps, I let out another 40' of chain and Our Time lowers his anchor and we keep a watchful eye on the GPS and determine we are holding good and we will worry about extricating ourselves from the crab traps in the morning. We all turn in about midnight. I sleep lightly.
